Feenixpawl are two of Australia’s most prominent DJs and producers having performed at major festivals across the globe such as Electric Zoo, Stereosonic, TomorrowWorld and more. They rose to prominence after their hit “In My Mind” reached number 1 on Beatport and held the number 1 spot on the ARIA Club Charts for 12 weeks in 2012. Following the massive success of “In My Mind”, the dynamic duo has since been garnering support from artist such as Martin Garrix, Hardwell, Tommy Trash & many more. In this interview we asked the duo to tell us about their workflow, favorite go-to plugins and their recent collaborative release entitiled “Home” on Ultra Records.
Splice: Can you tell us a bit about your workflow as collaborators when creating music? Do you prefer to work in the studio together? If apart,how do you currently share ideas /send parts back and forth?
Feenixpawl: This is something that is always different on every track. We moved to the US together last year, so we have the added benefit of living in the same house and being able to share ideas in a very relaxed environment. Sometimes we’ll just pass ideas back and forth on the couch or via Ableton Live projects. At the moment we’re doing all our production using headphones and on laptops until we set up our new studio, which makes collaborating hard but we often find a way.
Splice: Do you each have different skill sets you usually contribute to a project? Is one of you better at mixing? One arrangement etc?
Feenixpawl: I think we are equal when it comes to creating new ideas. We start putting our ideas into projects and let it evolve and grow from there. When it comes to mixing and mastering, we usually let one of us handle it and the other would give constructive feedback as we test our mix on various playback mediums. The benefit of doing it this way is that both of us wouldn’t be locked to one track but instead the other person who isn’t mixing or mastering can start and work on a new project.
Splice: Can you tell us about your recent release “Home” on Ultra Records? How did the collab between yourselves Bynon & Project 46 come about? Can you describe the process of collaborating with two other sets of producers?
Feenixpawl: We’ve been friends with Bynon for some time now and were talking about doing a collaboration when we all had some free time. He sent us an idea he had and we sent him a vocal that we were working on. We then decided to work on a track together and combine the ideas we had into 1 track. When Bynon sent a really quick sample of what we were working on to Project 46, they fell in love and had some great ideas on how we could make it a monster. We love collabs like this because the end outcome is a song that has the strengths of every artist and doesn’t follow the formula of one specific artist.
Splice: What are some of your favorite go-to plugins?
Feenixpawl: We love working with Spire at the moment (as many times as my CPU can handle). When it comes to creating new sounds, we generally use Sylenth, as the interface is quite easy to work with when creating entirely new patches. When we’re treating sounds or groups, we like to use Ozone a lot as well as FabFilter for EQ-ing.
Splice: Any advice you want to share?
Feenixpawl: Never give up! It took us quite a long time to get to where we are and we are still learning something new every single time we start a project. There’s no right or wrong way to do anything either, as long as you’re getting the results.
Splice: What about any other projects you want to tell us about?
Feenixpawl: We are starting a label called ‘Eclypse’ with our brother Jason Forte and our first release will be in mid April. We have a huge amount of new music coming out this year and we can’t wait to share it with everyone!
